Głowacki Piotr

He is considered one of the most-outstanding Polish actors of the young generation. He is a winner of the Polish Film Awards: the Eagle and the Zbigniew Cybulski Award. He has played for the biggest filmmakers in Poland, including Stuhr, Królikiewicz, Smarzowski, and Holland.

Piotr Głowacki was born in 1980, in Toruń, but spent the first period of his life in the region of Kujawy, in Redecz Wielki. In the beginning of the 1990s he and his family returned to Toruń, where he attended Primary School No. 24, and then Secondary School No. 10. He is a film, TV, and theatre actor. He was still a child when had his first contact with the stage – he performed in the “Baba Jaga” dancing ensemble in Toruń. During his education in the secondary school, he acted in the Spięty Teatr Spinaczy located in the Youth Culture Centre in Toruń, under the artistic supervision of Grażyna Pfeiffer–Podlaszewska. It was the same theatre where actress Magdalena Czerwińska learned her acting skills. After one year of studying law at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, Piotr Głowacki started his education in Studium Aktorskie (the Actors’ Studio) in Olsztyn, and then studied at the Aleksander Zelwerowicz National Academy of Dramatic Art in Warsaw and the AST National Academy of Theatre Arts in Kraków, finishing the latter in 2007. He has been part of the acting company of the Old Theatre in Kraków, since 2008.

His début in a full-feature film came in Długi weekend/The Long Weekend by Robert Gliński, in which he played Teoś Kozłowski. The film was part of the Święta polskie/Polish Holidays film series.  One year later, he was cast for Rozdroże Cafe/Crossroads Cafe by Leszek Wosiewicz.

His role as a hip-hop artist in Oda do radości/Ode to Joy (a short film directed by Jan Komasa) brought him the Jantar Grand Prix Award at “The Young and Cinema” Koszalin Debut Film Festival and the Prix Tudor Award at Cinéma Tout Écran in Geneva. He was also nominated for the Zbigniew Cybulski Award. In 2009, he played Janusz, the son of Mr and Mrs Dziabas in Dom zły/The Dark House by Wojciech Smarzowski. In 2010, he returned to Jan Komasa and played in his Sala samobójców/Suicide Room (2011), alongside Jakub Gierszał. In 2011, he played in a multitude of films, including Ukryci/Hidden by Agnieszka Holland, Bitwa Warszawska 1920/Battle of Warsaw 1920 by Jerzy Hoffman, 80 milionów/80 Million by Waldemar Krzystek, and the TV series 1920. Wojna i miłość/ 1920. War and Love by Maciej Migas, as well as in Być jak Kazimierz Deyna/Be like Kazimierz Deyna (2012) by Anna Wieczur-Bluszcz. His role in 80 milionów/80 Million brought him a special award at the 26th edition of Tarnów Film Awards and the second nomination for the Zbigniew Cybulski Award.

Still in 2011, he was awarded the Flisak Award of the President of Toruń at the Tofifest IFF, and one year later received the Złota Kareta (Golden Carriage) Award “for outstanding cultural achievements” given by the “Nowości” daily newspaper in Toruń. The third of his Toruń awards was receiving his own “Katarzynka” on Piernikowa Aleja Gwiazd (the Gingerbread Walk of Fame) in the Old Town in Toruń, and the fourth one the “Gwiazda Jutra” (Star of Tomorrow) Award given by the readers of the Gazeta Pomorska daily newspaper.   It is worth adding that the Zbigniew Cybulski Award finally came in 2012, for his role in Dziewczyna z szafy/The Girl from the Wardrobe by Bodo Kox.

Piotr Głowacki returned to Wojciech Smarzowski in 2012 to play in his Drogówka/Traffic Department (2013). Then, in 2015, he appeared in Hiszpanka/Influence (2015) by Łukasz Barczyk, alongside another native of Toruń – Jakub Gierszał. We could also see him in Sąsiady/Neighborhooders (2014) by Grzegorz Królikiewicz and Obywatel (2014) by Jerzy Stuhr.

2015 was definitely his time, because he played in as many as five films, namely in Karbala by Krzysztof Łukaszewicz, in 11 minut/11 Minutes by Jerzy Skolimowski, in Anatomia zła by Jacek Bromski, in Pilecki by Mirosław Krzyszkowski, and in Król życia/The King of Life by Jerzy Zieliński. In the same year, he partnered up with Dawid Ogrodnik and Joanna Kulig, in Disco polo, which was made in Piechcin, in the region of Kujawsko-Pomorskie+, by Maciej Bochniak.

The crowning achievement adding to his already-great popularity and to everything he did in 2014 was his role in Bogowie/Gods, in which he gave an excellent performance as Doctor Marian Zembala, a cardiologist. The role brought him the Polish Film Award: Eagle for the Best Supporting Male Character. The film went on to receive many awards, including the Golden Lions Grand Prix Award at the Gdynia Film Festival.

In 2016, he played in Maria Skłodowska-Curie by Marie Noëlle and in a number of romantic comedies – Słaba płeć?, ”, or 7 rzeczy, których nie wiecie o facetach.

Piotr Głowacki also played in True Crimes by Alexandros Avranas, alongside Jim Carrey and Charlotte Gainsbourg. The film is a film adaptation of a well-known case of a killer who described his crime in a book he published.

Since the dawn of his career, Piotr Głowacki has been actively involved in television series.  His small-screen début came in 2003, in the TV series Na Wspólnej. In addition, he played in the TV series Siostry, Barwy szczęścia, Instynkt, Komisarz Alex, Pierwsza miłość, Ojciec Mateusz, Skazane, Bodo, Na dobre i na złe, and in Druga szansa, in the latter of which he played the Director behind the reality show “Sara Daymer intymnie.”

He also played in two film series made in the Province of Kujawsko-Pomorskie, namely Prawo Agaty, in which he portrayed a representative of a publishing house, and in Belfer, as a very-distinctive police officer from a local precinct – Inspector Papiński.

Piotr Głowacki often works with independent filmmakers.  He played in Off by Mathias Mezler, which gained a lot of publicity among independent filmmakers, and in a number of short films: Pokój Szybkich Randek by Anna Maliszewska, and Stypa by Tomasz Bardosh (2007). He was also the leading character in the horror film Panoptykon/Panopticon. The actor also featured in low-budget films such as Heavy Mental by Sebastian Buttny, and Ścinki by Magdalena Gubała and Szymon Uliasz.  Piotr Głowacki played in a number of independent films made by filmmakers from Toruń, for example in Snufit by Marcel Woźniak and Paweł Zawadzki and in Głód/Hunger by Marika Krajniewska.
